CURATORS
STATEMENT
The
collecting passion of one man lay behind the creation of MAGNUM OPUS.
MAGNUM OPUS is a History of Photography Collection worthy of a fine
museum or magnificent private collection. Masterwork photographs of
19th and 20th century form this fully encompassing synoptic collection.
These works were collected with the deep belief that:
the
aesthetic of the image and the quality of the print are inextricably
intertwined; that,
the photo-historical relevance and a general fascination for the place
in art that this relatively new craft of photography have, greatly
expand our understanding of the history of mankind; that,
photography fits within the schema of the broad field of art history;
and that,
the ranks of photography's devotees are expanding rapidly.
These
concepts were not thoroughly developed when the collection was begun
in 1975. I became the active catalyst crystallizing these ideas in
the mind of its collector and nurtured these thoughts throughout the
decade of collecting that followed, never allowing the collection
to become a random assortment. I recognized that this might become
the last great photography collection making so grand a sweep through
the history of the media. All this was created with patience. Our
collector's innate sense of refinement and developed connoisseurship
made the process of creation a great pleasure for me.
